Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair Transplantation is the commonest cosmetics surgery performed among men. Hairy scalp is a sign of youthfulness and significantly contributes to personality of a man. So, loss of hair is often considered as loss of youthfulness and personality.

Commonest causes of hair fall and baldness in men are hormonal (Androgenic Alopecia) & Genetic effects. Physical stress (Physical illness, exhaustive lifestyle, etc.), Mental Stress (emotional disturbance etc.), Poor Nutrition (or bad food habits), Skin disease involving hair dandruff and Environmental factors also significantly contribute to it.

Androgenic alopecia is due to excess sensitivity of hair roots to male sex hormones (Androgens- Testosterone). This sensitivity initially leads to thinning of hairs (Miniaturized follicles). This leads to appearance of decreased density of thick/healthy hairs in scalp and appears as visible skin inside hairs. This is pre-baldness phase of scalp. This condition improves with medical treatment if started in time and usually doesn’t need hair restoration surgery. Later on, with continuous exposure to hormonal stimulus, these roots get destroyed completely- visible as total absence of hair in particular area (total baldness). Hairs roots in frontal and top part of scalp are more sensitive to this effect, so disappear early if not treated in time. Hair roots on sides and back of head are relatively resistant (strong in nature) to hormonal and other factors and stays lifelong. This difference in nature of hair in different areas of scalp (stronger hair roots on back- existence of permanent zone) is the basis of hair transplantation procedure.

After hair roots are completely destroyed permanently from particular area, no medical treatment (tablets/lotions/hair oils/any injections) helps and only option to get your natural hairs is hair transplantation. This procedure also helps to great extent in increasing density of hair in patients with low grade baldness giving “Complete Look”

Although scalp alopecia occurs both in male & female, pattern of both are different. In female it is commonly diffuse alopecia which commonly responds to medical treatment and rarely need hair transplantation.

In all modern techniques of hair transplantation, hair follicles from this permanent/safe zone are harvested and implanted to multiple micro slit made in recipient bald area of scalp.

Different Techniques of Hair Transplantation

Both the latest above mentioned hair transplantation techniques involve harvesting Follicular Micro grafts from permanent safe zone on back & sides of head and their placement inside Micro slits (recipient site) in area of baldness. The only difference between two is- method of harvesting follicles from donor site. You may find marketing of these techniques by certain brand-names, but don’t go by brand names because ultimate result depends only on the technique used (FUT / FUE) and skills of operating hair restoration surgeon.

In this technique, Micro Follicular units from donor site harvested with help of a small tubular punch individually (each follicle in separate manner), followed by their placement into micro slits made (0.7 – 0.8 8mm size) in recipient area. It is best suitable in small hair transplant (Typically 1000-1500 grafts).


It is scar-less technique (because, scars of micro follicular harvest are not apparently visible), so, beneficial when person wants very short hair style or shaved hairs on back.

It is said that it is painless technique, but it is not a real advantage of FUE, as you will be given local anesthesia before and pain medicines after procedure in both FUE & FUT. Considering this, with us, both Techniques are pain free.


Follicles are being harvested with a blind tubular punch, while a Follicular unit contains multiple follicles and their directions are different. So, chances of transaction of harvested hair roots (damage to one or more hair root among harvested follicular unit) as well of surrounding follicle is much high with this technique. So less number of hair grow from transplanted follicles than FUT Technique.

With this technique, maximum we can harvest up to 1500-2000 follicles from safe-permanent zone. If we have to get more number of follicles, we need to go outside it. Transplantation with such technique is a very common reason for loss of transplanted hairs couple of year after procedure. This is reason why we don’t recommend FUE technique where more number of grafts is required.

In this technique, an appropriate sized strip of skin containing hairs with intact roots is harvested from back and side of head and resulting area is closed carefully by meticulous Plastic surgery suturing under magnification to give least conspicuous scar in this area. Individual grafts (follicular units) are being separated from this strip of skin under magnification and implanted in same way as FUE inside micro slits.

We use Carl Zeiss 4x magnification loupes in harvesting skin strip to avoid damage to follicles at donor site and to make suturing meticulous.

Another important thing to give best result is to reduce ischemia time (time during which hair roots remain outside body-before implantation). We make micro slits on recipient area before harvesting strip, which increase survival of hair more than any other technique.


More number of follicles can be harvested in a single session (reason as described above, less number of follicle get transected while harvest and a team of trained technicians separate follicles under magnified vision). We do transplant of up to 3500 follicles in a single session to give maximum density in your head.

More number of hairs grows out of transplanted follicles, as; transaction is far less than FUE.

All the transplanted hairs are from “safe permanent zone” of your hairs, so stays on your head for years.


Impart a scar on back of your head (which may be visible if you are fond of keeping hairstyle with complete shaved hairs or very small 1-2 mm trimming of hairs on back.)

After Procedure

We will prescribe medicines to make you pain free and also to prevent any infection after transplantation. (You can contact our surgeons anytime in case of any problem)

You have to take care of newly transplanted hairs- avoid any friction or shearing at treated area. We will give you a cap to wear on head for protection from dust.

You can start your routine activity on very next day including office work. You should avoid stressful activity, prolonged sun exposure and exercise for 15 days.

You can start washing your hairs 2 day after procedure as explained to you. You should start application of hair nourishing solutions as per advice of our hair transplant surgeon.

All your transplanted hairs in recipient area will fall off gradually (in couple of weeks) and the roots placed inside skin will stick in. New hairs will start growing out of these roots after 3-4 month. They typically remains very scarce initially. But don’t worry about density of growing hair at this point ! They increase in density gradually taking 10-12 months to achieve maximum. After that, they grow naturally throughout life and behave in same manner as they were programmed to behave at their original place (Donor Site).

Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma), it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells, and platelets.) The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries.

PRP is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets — and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors — can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.

To develop a PRP preparation, blood must first be drawn from your body. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called Centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood. The area with decreased density of hair is injected with the PRP preparation.

Although it is not exactly clear how PRP works, but laboratory studies have shown that the increased concentration of growth factors in PRP can potentially speed up the growth of hairs.
